Mardy - Rhondda

We are told that work started at Mardy in 1875 and that the task was undertaken by a Welshman named Mordecai Jones.

In 1885, ten years after the colliery began production, an explosion cost 81 miners their lives. In the same decade another 36 explosions rocked the South Wales coalfield.

Mardy Colliery utilised four shafts. In the 1940's the NCB began a restoration programme at the pit. The shafts were given much needed repairs and the colliery itself was totally modernised.

Mardy closed shortly after the end of the 1984/85 strike..
